Post Bicycle City
So I'm interning for this really neat organization called Bicycle City this summer. Bicycle City is a planned car-free communities project. Its vision is a future with sustainable cities and communities that are eco-, people- and animal-friendly.

They are interested in promoting bicycle- and walkable-friendly cities anywhere in the world, and they have an office located here in Pittsburgh:

Check out the website and let me know if anyone would like to join the newsletter. The more support they get, the more successful their project will be.

Ok, Cool. I've browsed around a certain amount, and I'd take a newsletter.
Questions!
Are they interested more in planning and building new communities or in figuring out how to redo current ones?
What projects are they currently doing (I see a lot of networking and vision)?
Are they looking to act at a higher policy level or a small-projects-everywhere level?

So the project they are working on now is in Columbus, South Carolina. There is a space available that is ideal for the project, but they need 65 more lot reservations in order to secure the area and start building. (I e-mailed you a copy of the latest newsletter, hopefully that helps). So, as of now, there are plans to build a new community from ground up. However, they are looking into some places in Pittsburgh as well as other cities to do retrofitting and rundown/empty lot conversion projects as well.

From what I have gathered, there is talk of taking on multiple small projects versus one huge one. But most of this is all in the 'vision' stage. The only concrete plan they have as of yet is this thing in South Carolina. It seems like that will be the sort of pilot project to test the waters.

Post Re: Bicycle City
I seems like something inexpensive, uncomplicated and comfortable. Something not too heavy is a plus, since I would often need to carry the bike up and down stairs.Simply bicycles may be good for short or close to home trips but are not for long trips or in bad weather.
