Post Peak Everything: Rare Metals Ethics Edition
Article from the (almost always excellent) Yale e360 site on our dependence on rare metals and whether our simultaneous demand for them and desire to protect our environment simply pushes destruction to other areas of the world (short answer: yes, it does).

I think the questions are two-fold: Would you rather have modern technology or avoid mining? And what other solutions might exist?

Well the answer's pretty simple--we mine asteroids!

No really though, this is a big issue. It seems that whatever we do seems to have really negative impacts and that nothing we do will ever approach sustainability. Maybe, we have to give up this way of life and go towards primitism.
